“The Lord himself goes before you and will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged.” Deuteronomy 31:8
I love public speaking.
Yep. I really truly do.
Recently, I was challenged to share on a FB LIVE video. FB LIVE as in, well, LIVE. No edits, no filters, and I figured, no problem.
I headed outside to our deck. The morning air was crisp and I knew it was the perfect place.
But, soon after I hit the LIVE button, something unexpected happened. I had a brain freeze. I stumbled and fumbled for all the world to see. And, I had no idea until it was over that I was filming sideways.
My fingers couldn’t move fast enough to delete it. In fact, what happened after is mostly a blur, except I remember I went to bed early. Like 8 pm early.
The covers of fear were cozier than my perception of perfection.
Why are we so afraid of what others will think of us? Why do we allow their opinions (real or imagined) stop us quicker than a red light on a country road?
By the way, I forgot to tell you what I was sharing on FB LIVE. It was my “right now invitation”…in other words, I was answering the question “What does God want you to be right now?”
For me, it was brave.
Awww, man, I want to be. Oh God, please help me to be.
So, the next morning, I went back out on the deck, pushed the FB LIVE button on my phone, and embraced my imperfections.
Take that, fear!
In the process of being brave, I learned a few things.
Talk about it. I know, I know. I can’t believe I said that either. But, pretending all is well can hold us captive. Transparency is freedom, friend. Tell others about your fears. Ask them to pray. Accept their encouragement and love. Perhaps God is using your brave to encourage another soul? How awesome is that!
“Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.” Joshua 1:9
Try Try Again. Ever wonder “why is this happening?”, only to later have a light bulb moment and think “Ohhh, now I understand”. That’s what happened to me. God was making me brave through that messy first try…which was actually a blessing in disguise….a blessing in brave.
“I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you with my loving eye on you.” Psalm 32:8
Trust God. Trust is surrendering to our Heavenly Father when we can’t see the finish line. Or, the FB LIVE video. Or, the test results from the doctor. Or, that thing with our job. Or, what’s really going on with our kids. Or, what’s gonna happen tomorrow.
“I lift my eyes to the mountains—where does my help come from? My help comes from the Lord, the maker of heaven and earth.” Psalm 121:1-2
Oh dear one, I want to live my life brave. Not just out on my deck, but everywhere and every single day.
Don’t you? XO
