“A happy heart makes the face cheerful, but heartache crushes the spirit.” Proverbs 15:13 (NIV)
The line was super long and so were the frowns.
She was the lone rangerette ringing up customers and clearly overwhelmed. Smiling was the last thing on her mind.
As I stood there, staring her down with my fellow hurry-uppers, I didn’t have much empathy for her. Okay. I didn’t have any empathy for her. Instead, there was just one thought on my mind:
Can’t she move those fingers just a little bit faster?
Finally, it was my turn.
I placed my items on the counter, without a murmur of hello from my lips. But, when I reached inside my purse, pulled out my money and looked up at her, a miracle occurred.
She was smiling!
Smiling and pointing to my little change purse with the ink pen scars. Ah yes, my happy little change purse.
“I love her!” her voice crackled like a thirsty soul that had finally received refreshment.
Because in some ways, it had.
And at that moment, I forgot all about the wait and found myself smiling too.
Yep…I see you over there with the eye roll….and I get it. You’re thinking “That’s a sweet little story…blah blah blah…but life isn’t always, well, happy.”
And you would be correctamundo.
After all, we’ve got places to go, people to see, and quite frankly, no time to mess with “happy” in the responsibilities of our world.
But, that’s the problem. It’s not just our world, as in one of us. It’s our world, as in all of us.
Beloved, what if we were more intentional in our happy? More concerned about another soul than ourselves? What if we showed love in unexpected ways?
Because it’s in the giving that we receive.
“Dear children, let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth.” 1 John 3:18 (NIV)
I have no idea if her smile lingered after I left the store and it doesn’t matter. I’m content in knowing that for a few moments in her crazy busy day, we shared an unexpected smile.
And that makes me happy like a change purse.
Only better. 🙂
(This post is dedicated to my cosmic sis, Lisa, who gave me that happy little change purse. She is with Jesus now and her happiness is forever.)
Spread your joy,
