“He replied, ‘You of little faith, why are you so afraid?’ Then he got up and rebuked the winds and the waves, and it was completely calm.” Matthew 8:26 (NIV)
It usually goes something like this…
“Hello, my name is Tina.”
“Tina? As in Christina? I have a cousin/friend/poodle whose real name is Christina, but we call her Tina…is Christina your REAL NAME?”
And, I reply with my half-smile like I always do, “No, my real name is Tina.”
But, truth be told, I do have another name and on some days, it’s as real as my given one.
Perhaps you can relate?
The disciples sure could.
“Then he got into the boat and his disciples followed him. Suddenly a furious storm came up on the lake, so that the waves swept over the boat. But Jesus was sleeping. The disciples went and woke him, saying, ‘Lord, save us! We’re going to drown!” Matthew 8:23-25 (NIV)
Can you picture it? The waves are so huge that they are splashing over the boat. The disciples are freaking out and Jesus is, well, sleeping!
But, let’s back up a minute and remember that the disciples have been following Jesus. They have spent much time together. They have seen His miracles first hand. Yet, in their circumstances and despite the fact that they loved and believed in Him, their faith in that stormy moment was small.
Just like mine could be. Just like yours could be.
After Jesus calmed the seas, the men were amazed and asked, “What kind of man is this? Even the winds and the waves obey him!” Matthew 8:27 (NIV)
Their response is so human, isn’t it? They were “amazed”. They knew Jesus and still, they were amazed!
And yet, so are we. When our prayers are answered in a big way, we are in awe of God. Everything is “Hallelujah and Thank You, Jesus!”
But…in the wait…in the storm…in the uncertainty of life’s situations, it’s a whole different story, right?
Because when everything in us screams “Lord, save us!”…we tend to forget that our boat is covered with the love and protection of our Heavenly Father.
Yes, we of Little Faith.
So, how can we turn that Little Faith into the Big Faith that we want so badly, but seem to forget about so quickly?
Ask and believe.
Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything. If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you. But when you ask, you must believe and not doubt, because the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind. James 1:1-6 (NIV)
Beloved, you know that Little Faith thing you’re in right now? He knows all about it. And He is right there with you.
Won’t you cry out to the One who loves you more than you can imagine and ask Him for wisdom to hold on and believe?
I’ll go first.
“Hello Father, my name is….”
Spread your joy,
