“And, I will be a Father to you, and you will be my sons and daughters, says the Lord Almighty.” 2 Corinthians 6:18 (NIV)
My Daddy-O was one of the coolest dudes you’d ever meet. He wasn’t afraid to be himself and never knew a stranger.
That would come in handy for me someday.
It was Girl Scout cookie time and we were encouraged to sell sell sell. In doing so, we’d earn a special badge for our cute little sash. Honestly, that wasn’t enough incentive for this shy little girl, but the grand prize sure was: a Girl Scout doll who I was convinced looked just like me.
Man, I wanted that doll.
And he wanted it for me.
“Whatcha got there, Joe?” he asked in his Italian accent. I carefully unfolded the order form and handed it to him. “They want us to sell cookies,” I replied with dismay. He looked at it, then at me, “And what will you get if you do?” Suddenly and without a second thought, I blurted it out.
“A badge and A BEAUTIFUL GIRL SCOUT DOLL!”
“I see,” he grinned, with coolness magnified. “Well, how about I take it to work with me and see what happens?
He didn’t have to ask twice.
I learned years later more about his efforts. Seems he asked airmen and sergeants and generals. He asked people in mess halls and the commissary. In other words, he convinced anyone who liked a cookie, ate a cookie, or knew what a cookie was that they couldn’t live without buying at least one box from his kid.
That doll is still my favorite.
Dear one, Father’s Day is right around the corner. Maybe, like me, your Daddy has been gone for many years. Or, perhaps your Daddy is alive physically, but not emotionally. It could be that your relationship with your Daddy is strained. Or, you may not even know your Daddy due to circumstances beyond your control.
I want to encourage our hearts today.
We are not fatherless. Never were. Our Heavenly Father has been with us all along.
Oh friend, how he loves us. We can’t even comprehend the depths of His love.
Before He spoke creation, The God of Heaven knew our names
Formed in His reflection. We are His glory on display
And His heart is good, He is always kind
With a cross He proved, He is on my side
We are the sons, we are the daughters of God
No matter where we go, we’re close to the Father’s heart
And though we stumble, He will not let us fall
We are the Lord’s and He will never forsake His own
We are the sons, we are the daughters of God.” –Sons and Daughters/Brett Stanfill
Nowadays, during Girl Scout cookie time, I can still spot those little green uniforms a mile away. I happily stop and trade my dollars for a couple boxes of cookies.
In memory of my Daddy-O.
Spread your joy,
