But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, “Lord, save me!” Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him. “You, of little faith,” he said, “why did you doubt?” And when they climbed into the boat, the wind died down. Matthew 14:30-32 (NIV)
“C’mon, get on the boat!”
I can still hear those words from my Daddy-O.
You see, as a little girl, I was afraid of the dark. So, on those nights when I woke up terrified, I knew the boat was waiting.
Oh. Did I mention that the “boat” was actually my parent’s bed?
I’d “board” in between Daddy-O and Mama and the adventure would begin.
D-O would put the cover waaaay up high over all of us, like a tent and proclaim:
“That wind is really blowing tonight; go ahead and close your eyes; you are safe on the boat.”
(Cue the wind sounds…whoosh, whoosh, whooooooosh!)
“There’s the cave, Joe (his nickname for me)…but, we’re okay, just keep your eyes closed, we are going to hide in the cave until the wind stops blowing.”
So, as we approached “the cave”, I squinted my eyes as tightly as I could and cuddled closer to them.
“Joe, we’re inside the cave now. All three of us together. You are safe.”
Then, he whispered the words that made everything alright.
“Night. Dreams. Love.”
And when I woke up the next morning, there I was, in MY bed…safe and sound…just like my Daddy said.
While reflecting on this story, I was reminded of another.
The one where the disciples were being tossed around at sea.
In a real boat.
In a real storm.
Needless to say, they were afraid.
Then, Jesus showed up…and said “Take courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid.” (Matthew 14:27b NIV)
Ahhhh…but that’s the hard part, isn’t it?
To be courageous in the midst of the life storms?
To walk on the water of trust when it’s so much easier to sink into the depths of fear?
I’m with you, friend.
So, can I encourage us with some truth today?
There is no storm too big for God.
Not. Even. THAT. One.
Will you trust Him with your storm right now
And rest on the boat of His love?
I’ll see you there.
Everything will be alright.
Night. Dreams. Love.
Spread your joy,
