“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.” Proverbs 3:5-6 (NIV)
It started at a young age.
“Mama, what if THEY don’t like me?”
She’d smile and answer in her soft sweet voice “Honey, if you please yourself, you please somebody.”
My honest response still rings true today.
“But, I want to please everybody!”
Yep, the struggle is real, people.
The need to please.
Know what I mean?
Then, you’re familiar with them….
The Great and Powerful THEY.
THEY eat us up, little by little, nibbling away at our self-esteem until all that’s left are the crumbs.
Crumbs of second-guessing and people-pleasing.
Not a pretty sight.
So, who are THEY anyway?
And, why do we crave their permission so deeply?
The truth is that we are afraid.
Afraid of what THEY will say, so we pretend everything is fine, thankyouverymuch.
Afraid of what THEY will think, so we hide instead of living free.
Afraid that THEY won’t accept us or…dare I go there…THEY won’t love us.
Fear is a lie, dear one.
It consumes us and steals our joy. It causes us to live in a bubble of worry about things that may or may not happen. It keeps our eyes on our circumstances and away from our Heavenly Father.
Man, I’m so ready to pop that bubble…aren’t you?
To replace our big fear with even bigger faith.
To seek His will instead of their approval.
To embrace His Love, which is free and forever and can fill all those voids that we believe THEY could.
But never do.
“May my meditation be pleasing to him, as I rejoice in the Lord.” Psalm 104:34 (NIV)
Beloved, it’s so easy to fall into the people-pleasing trap of THEY.
I confess that I’m still a work in progress and the road ahead is full of construction.
Nevertheless, I’m learning to shift my focus away from the Great and Powerful THEY…
To the ONE who loves and accepts me just the way I am.
Spread your joy,
